Learn to Fly

What do you love about volleyball? The competition. Every play results in scoring. Power. Grace. Athleticism.

The Olympics remind us about the diversity of people and sport that attracts us to competition. Sometimes it's easy to forget that 'what you see' is the tip of the iceberg of work that drives the process.

  • Model excellence.
  • Lead by example.
  • Mentor young players.
  • Do the little things because they end up being big things.
  • Put the welfare of the team first.
  • Ask "what can I do to help?"
  • Celebrate small wins.
  • Make this play. Be a dirt dog.
  • Communicate at all times.
  • Thank your family for supporting you.

Attention to detail every step of the way defines 'who you are' and 'how you play'. To do your job well, know your job completely.

Everyone focuses on the 'game winner', the point that drives a stake into the vampirish opponent or is driven into us. That forgets all the winners and errors that set the stage. A 'campfire' on the first point of the set might be the difference maker. The thumb that touches the net can separate a state championship from a semifinal loss.

Resilience means not just learning to fly but to land softly.
