What Drives You?

The best motivation is an "intrinsic" desire to excel.

But coaching motivation matters, too. As a coach, I distributed laminated handouts including the John Wooden, "Pyramid of Success" and Jay Bilas's "Toughness" criteria. I also gifted each player a "composition notebook" with the recommendations that after each practice and game, they write down three things they did well and one thing they didn't...and a specific plan to improve the 'need' area.

The 2012 team brought talent and fire to the court every day. I'd bet the house that those players "bring it" every day at home, at work, and in all their other pursuits.

Lauren Joyce was a girl from Melrose whom we coached in Middle School. She attended Austin Prep, was a three sport captain and a top student. She graduated from Annapolis as a Naval Officer. Her mother told me that Lauren kept the "Pyramid of Success" in the gym bag that she took to school each day as a reminder about what success demands.

Whom do you want to become? Are your habits consistent with that goal? Dream big and work bigger.
