Repost: Chekhov's Gun

Robert Redford's death reminded me of the principle of "Chekhov's Gun," shared in this 2024 post.

As a writer, a coach, or a player, you job is to "advance the story." A failure or mishap can advance the story. Consider this narrative, "As the 2000 NFL draft wore on, it wore on Tom Brady more than most. Undrafted so far, the Michigan star left his home and went for a walk, swinging a baseball bat. Brady was an accomplished catcher in high school. Brady's frustration created a massive chip on the shoulder of the future 6th round draft pick."

You can't tell Brady's narrative without the Draft Day story.

Three-quarters of the 2025 regular season remains. Dissatisfaction with the season or your contribution isn't a negative. Use it. Fuel your commitment to concentrate better, to practice harder, to come back stronger.

Every day is a chance to build your culture.
