Melrose went into the lions’ den to face top-ranked Winchester at McCall Middle School and got blanked 25-14, 25-20, 25-12.
The loss drops Melrose to 2-3 and Winchester stays unbeaten.
Melrose made a few lineup changes, shifting Anna Burns to libero and Sabrina McArt to MH2. Changes were beyond cosmetic and adjustment takes time. Not enough time quite yet.
Melrose went up 6-0 but a Winchester timeout kept the Red and Black from being black and blue. Melrose struggled against Winchester’s multidirectional attack and with serve-receive. After the timeout Winchester gradually pulled away.
Melrose jumped out in set two, leading 4-0 and 14-11 but struggled to maintain momentum. Sabine had a big kill to lead 15-14 but Winchester tied.
Melrose led 18-16 with Adele Akland serving with Adriana Santoriello firing in a cross court smash to trigger a timeout at 19-16. Winchester's maturity and experience showed.
The Red and Black scored on consecutive errors to tie, forcing a Scott Celli timeout.winch took the next point then aced and earned another point on an error, drawing Melrose’s last TO.
Winchester closed out the set 25-20 despite competitive volleyball.
Winchester grabbed a quick 6-3 lead in the third with consistency and power. Coach Celli took a timeout at 4-10. Adriana answered with a kill and Winchester erred to make it 6-10.At 7-13, MVB got the serve but committed an attack error.
Serving at 8-15, Melrose committed another attack error. A Sabine block made it 9-17. Winchester rolled until a monster Sabine kill made it 19-10.
The Red and Black ground MVB down with more consistency in all phases.
Winchester closed the match 25-12 with more art.
Game Notes: Melrose struggled at times with the low ceiling (the same for both sides) and couldn't get into offense enough because of serve-receive inconsistency. That led to many easy Winchester points and free balls that couldn't be overcome.
MVB will continue to work and get to a situation where they can generate more and more diversified offense.
