Growth Is a Challenge

Coaches help teams go where they cannot go alone. Growth demands leaving comfort zones.

Years ago our middle school girls team had an unacceptable, unfocused one point road loss to a small aggressive team. We got outhustled and outmuscled. They deserved to win. I explained that we would win the rematch, with quicker ball movement and decision-making. No more held balls. We worked on "1 second decisions. Catch and shoot, pass, or drive."

In the rematch, we lead 20-2 at halftime. Ellen overheard the opposition parents. "That's the same coach, but they got new players." Ellen stood up for me. "No, those are the same players."

As Coach Don Meyer would say, more than anything else "It matters how you play not who you play."

Define your destiny with focus, teamwork, and toughness. Don't allow people to recognize the team in late October as the same one from late August.
