Game 3: Reading 3 Melrose 1

Melrose hosted Reading and came up short 25-20, 12-25, 15-25, and 22-25. The loss drops Melrose to 2-1. It's hard to know who's who on a small screen on MHS-TV.

Reading made more plays. Melrose struggled at times with serve receive and couldn't convert on many opportunities.

Melrose drifted out to a slow start, trailing 3-9 early. They went on an 11-2 run to force a Rocket timeout. Dani DiGiorgio had a lengthy service run sparking the rally.

Sabine had a huge block to go up 16-12 ,but Reading rallied to 16-15 before Sabine answered. Down the stretch Reading got as close as 21-19 but Melrose pulled away to win 25-20.

The second set was "quicksand" with Melrose unable to find its footing as Reading had a 7-1 run to close after a Melrose timeout at 14-18.

The third set wasn't a lot better as Melrose continued unable to establish momentum.

Melrose rallied in the fourth set with better execution. Trailing 11-13, they went on a run to lead 16-14 and 20-15. A Reading timeout turned the set around for them as they won 7 of the next 8 points to lead 21-22 and 21-24. A Reading smash went wide and the next was in to seal the deal.

Coach Scott Celli predicted that it would come down to serve and serve receive and that explained the results. Reading deserved to win as they played better volleyball.

As a former middle school hooper said long ago, "We win as a team and we lose as a team."
