Tools of Refinement

Find ways to improve. Michelin three-star chef Thomas Keller introduces the term "tools of refinement" in his MasterClass. They do exactly what they sound like.

You could think of them as training devices for food. For example, a tamis can be used to refine boiled potatoes for pomme puree and a Chinois (China cap) is a sieve that chefs use to refine scrambled eggs.

What refines your volleyball training? Things to consider:
  • Strength and conditioning exercises
  • Coaches' stand
  • Blocking pads
  • Spike training machine
  • Jump boxes
  • Training tower
  • Hitting machine
  • Setter training net
Of course, nobody needs any of these. A few underrated items for you to consider:

1. Jump rope. Inexpensive and proven to improve quickness and endurance.

2. Cellphone video. Watch yourself on video. Be objective in assessing strengths and need areas.

3. Game video. Are you in the right place at the right time? Are you 'reading the game' in real time? Are you fully focused or does an error disrupt your concentration?

4. Mindfulness scripts. Build resilience. Try these UCLA Mindfulness scripts...

5. Mentoring. Find a mentor. Become a mentor. The teacher learns in order to teach.

Lagniappe. Building confidence.
Lagniappe 2. "Volleyball is a game of failure."
