"The best offenses have the ability to reset and adapt on a dime." - Coach K in Leading by the Heart
Jocko Willink, Navy SEAL Team Leader and leadership expert shared how a team member explained, "I can only remember three things. What are they going to be?"
I'm neither a volleyball expert or coach, but I'll try a few.
1) "Every day is player development day." Talent isn't the same as skill. Talent plus practice and judgment becomes skill. Contemporary players have more experience and skill development than those twenty years ago. They have to because the competition improves, too.
2) "Be a goldfish."
Momentum matters. Put a previous tough play behind you and move on. Stop opponents before they can recover and change momentum. Put a tough loss behind you and work even harder.
3) Believe in yourself. You can only be as good as your self-belief. So "if you want to be 'the guy' then 'be the guy'. The top hitters in college volleyball have attack efficiency (kills - errors)/attacks around fifty percent. You likely won't.
If it were solely about execution, I'd shorten it, "keep the ball up" and "put the ball down."
The coaches will supply your big three.
Summary:
- Every day is player development day.
- Be a goldfish.
- Believe in yourself.
Lagniappe. Improve defensive reaction time and consistency.
