Make learning your superpower. That includes learning to read the game. 

Opponent strategy

• Where do they attack? 
• Where is their defense weakest? 
• Do they have a player to attack with the serve? 

Opponent personnel

• Who are their top players? 
• Do they have a weaker blocker? 
• Where do they serve? 

Reading the opponent

• Does the setter telegraph location? 
• Do hitters reveal their intent (e.g. tips)? 

Make your time on the sideline useful so that when you get your opportunity, you're ready.
