Positive Coaching

Coaches have many roles - teacher, mentor, motivator, evaluator, psychologist, judge, and more. It's not only what we say, but how we say it and how it's perceived.

Coach Pete Newell said that a coach's primary job was to "help players SEE THE GAME."

I'll add a couple:
  • "The coach is the keeper of the story."
  • "The coach does what is best for the team first."
  • "The coach puts the players in the best position to succeed."
  • "Coaches decide." They decide when teams need a timeout to address an issue or a "time in" to figure it out by themselves.
  • "Coaches help take players where they cannot go alone."

Lagniappe. With young players, it's tempting to say that it will just take time. Coach Scott Celli emphasizes the importance of focus and hard work at practice to compress that time.
