Excitement doesn't always translate to winning. Burlington kept Freedom Division hopes alive with a 25-17, 19-25, 13-25, 25-15, and 15-13 win at Melrose.
The loss drops Melrose to 11-7.
Melrose had its moments but couldn't deliver in set 5. The earlier sets were not close.
Melrose dominated set two and three with big contributions from Adriana Santoriello and Ella Friedlaender. As usual Sabine Wenzel was in the mix.
In set five, Burlington led 8-6 at the switch and Melrose fought even to 10. Melrose had two errors to trail 10-12 and then fought back to 13-14 only to have the Red Devils score on a right-sided attack to close.
The truth was that an opponent made a few more plays. On a brighter note, Melrose did not "go soft" on attack, but couldn't execute well enough.
Remaining games are at Stoneham Wednesday and hosting Watertown Friday.
Melrose will likely be on the road to start the playoffs next week.
