The last song Doug Collins heard coming out of the locker room in the 1972 Olympics before facing the Russians, was Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?" Wakefield had never defeated Melrose, which every Wakefield fan knew, as the Warriors won at home 25-18, 25-23, 25-23.
The loss drops Melrose to 10-5 as they suffer a second consecutive loss and look to recapture some momentum headed into the postseason.
Volleyball analysis is usually simple. One team makes more plays.
Melrose held significant leads in every set, but fell vulnerable to momentum. In the first set, Melrose led 17-14 and Wakefield won 11 of the next 12 points.
Melrose took the lead in the second stanza and again couldn't make enough plays. Wakefield scored with rainbows to the corners and held MVB down with excellent blocking in the middle. Even with Adriana Santoriello warming up in the set with at least three kills, Melrose couldn't close them out.
Melrose sprinted out to a 6-0 lead in the finale, but again Wakefield chipped away and tied the score at 20. Melrose went up 22-20 but Wakefield had enough juice to tie at 23, go up on a Melrose error, and delivered a kill to the deep corner to win.
Coach Scott Celli made numerous adjustments during the match, from the outset restoring freshman Alisa Dautovic to the back row, used Maggie Shoemaker as a designated server, and Sabrina McArt handle MH2 in the third set. Not enough answers emerged.
Melrose Notes: Melrose fans turned out in a good showing and the match had a playoff atmosphere. Wakefield's Coach Kayla Wyland, a pivotal part of Melrose's 2012 Championship team, had her parents on hand.
