To be or to do? This is an eternal question.
Some players put themselves before the team. I call them "scorebook players." Their primary concern is their 'numbers' not team success. There's a story about a coach telling one such player to inbound the basketball. Then his coach told his teammates to walk off the court. He told the player, "Play." Message delivered.
This isn't unique to sports. Conservative columnist David Frum wrote that most people go into politics wanting to do something. But over time, that often evolves to wanting to be someone. Policy suffers over politics.
"Possession enders" tend to get overrepresentation in sports. The 'guy' who scores gets more ink than the teammate who defends. Accumulating kills earns more glamor than the defenders diving and digging keeping plays alive. Usually the hitters know that without the hockey assist and the great set, their job is impossible.
Without the great work of primary defenders Grace Gentile, Maggie Turner, and Gigi Albuja in the back, Melrose wouldn't be contending.
Did you see? Junior Ava Perrotti and sophomore Emme Boyer both had their first varsity kills last game.
Looking ahead.
Melrose travels to Wakefield Tuesday looking to hold off the Warriors (9-4), power ranked #7 in Division 3. Wakefield has defeated Burlington and Woburn this year despite having four of their top five attackers from the sophomore and junior ranks. Expect a tough match.
