Volleyball reveals some hidden demographic truths. Affluent communities have competitive sport advantage over economically distressed ones. What communities are at the top of the divisional leaderboards? Newton, Westborough, Nipmuc (Upton) and Weston. Nipmuc's is a bit deceptive because their average margin of victory approaches 3.
Both genetics and environment (affluence, etc.) impact height. Affluence allows parents to invest in the training (gym memberships, offseason sports, personal training) promoting higher skill and experience levels.
The median family income in Newton is over $164,000 in 2021 dollars (source: US Census Bureau). In Westborough, it's above $118K. It's $125K plus in Melrose. In Weston, it's over $220K. In Lexington, it's almost $203K. In Chelsea, it's about $65K. Offseason volleyball is expensive, costing thousands of dollars in fees and extra for transportation and lodging at regional or national tournaments.
Lexington is tall and talented. Maxpreps.com doesn't list Lexington statistics. Here's a link to Lexington-Woburn video showing Lexington's capabilities. Today's game offers another formidable challenge.
