The challenge resonates regardless of the season, sport, or age of the players. In today's Boston Globe, Adam Himmelsbach interviewed Celtics skipper Joe Mazzulla about young players' development.
“I think the biggest thing is, can you handle being in and out of a lineup and knowing that when your name is called it’s because we need you to execute a role and really need you to help us win?” Mazzulla said. “And, at the same time know that our development team has really put in a long-term development plan to say, ‘We want you to be here by the end of the season, All-Star break, postseason.’
“And it’s tough. I’ve coached guys like that. Can you feel appreciated and valued every day? Can you answer the bell when your name is called? And can you get better every single day?"
The three seniors have to lead by example every day. The best player on every team has to be the hardest worker. And every team member needs that urgency to improve and perform daily.
