Years ago our middle school girls played a far superior Andover team, battling into the final minute before losing 47-43. The girls said the Andover parents told them they competed best of any team they had played.
Good loss? Moral victory? Progress, but not winning. Use it to motivate 'continual ascension'.
Be worthy competitors every day at practice and games. What does that mean?
"Don't cheat the drill." Ralph Labella and I attended a UCONN Women's Basketball practice a few years back. Coach Auriemma sent the women off with two laps. Nobody cut corners. Excellent teams don't skip steps.
Focus and act aggressively. Washington Post investigative journalist Bob Woodward kept a sign on his desk "FAA" - focus and act aggressively. Taking down dictators and crooked politicians is hard work.
Bring your best self daily. A young actor, Samuel L. Jackson went to an audition to find James Earl Jones there. Jackson said, "what are you doing here?" "Same as you, auditioning." Be your best version daily.
Varsity sports are not about moral victory.
