Melrose's friendly and intense rivalry with Frontier manifested in a tough road defeat today at South Deerfield, losing 25-22, 17-25, 23-25, 25-19, 13-15. Five sets netted a three point differential.
The loss drops Melrose to 8-4 after losing to the second-ranked Red Hawks in Division 5.
This might have been the toughest nonleague schedule Melrose has ever faced, including the top team in the state (Westborough), top divisional teams in Newton North and Frontier, and a strong Peabody club.
My sources report that Frontier played exceptional defense. And at match point, Melrose literally had a slip and fall costing them a chance to keep the ball in play.
In such a competitive road match against top competition, small differences in consistency and execution separate victory and defeat. Frontier made more plays and deserved to win.
Melrose notes: Melrose goes back to action against another elite Division 1 competitor Tuesday, facing John Fleming's Winchester club.
Sadie Jaggers was a standout today, playing her best match ever.
Underrated? Communication. As a player, speak up to stand out. Energize yourself and teammates.
