Preview - Not a Game of Perfect

You want to be perfect. Fuggedaboutit.

The introduction to Dr. Bob Rotella's "Golf Is not a Game of Perfect" makes three key points.

1. Learn to think in the most effective and efficient way every day.

2. "It's the Psychology of Excellence."

3. "My job as a coach of mental skills is to help players go where they might not be able to go on their own."

There's no defense in golf. The player puts the ball in play with their intent and their swing, looking to shape the "effective and efficient" shot for that situation.

Your future as a player depends on your inputs on the physical and the mental side of the game. Neglect either and you will fall short of your goals.

Control what you can control.

  • Work on the relevant skills for your position. If you want to play "all six" rotations, then you need more skills. Nobody's platform skills, attack or block footwork, or armswing are "too good."
  • Regardless of position, benefit from athleticism and conditioning.
  • Build mental skills - train focus and resilience.
Check in with your coaches from time to time about what you're working on, the progress you're seeing, and "look for the helpers."

Lagniappe. Read this when you're having a bad day.
