Melrose hosts the Stoneham Spartans today. Ancient Spartan mothers were famous for this quote, "Come home with your shield or on it."
This admonition, recorded by the historian Plutarch in his Sayings of Spartan Women, was spoken by a Spartan mother to her son as she handed him his shield (hoplon) before battle. The saying emphasized that a soldier should either return victorious carrying his shield or die on it, but never discard it in cowardly retreat, as doing so endangered the phalanx formation.* (AI assist)
