Almost nobody earns "overnight success" in sports or other domains.
The Crossroads for Success
- Genetic inheritance of size and athleticism
- Skill development
- Volleyball IQ through experience
- Physical and psychological 'hardening' training
"Mentoring is the only shortcut to success." Work with your coaches, showing your eagerness to improve and desire for success. Coaches take satisfaction in seeing players 'reap the fruits of their labors'.
Study your game. Watch your video with a keen eye for what happened, your decisions, and the outcome.
Study great teams and players. You might send an email to a great college player you admire (or their coach - info online) and ask about their player development. People like to be asked.
Work out with a teammate or as a group. Track progress, looking for "personal bests."
Find perspective...it's family, school, sports. Seek balance among your work-life-growth options.
Think
Take a few minutes a day to reflect on your growth 'arc'. For example, in Duxbury set 4, at 23-24, Sadie's dig kept the match alive, one of the epic plays in MVB history. In the State Finals of 2005, Melrose lost in five sets. But they trailed 0-2, 16-23 to rally with a 10-1 run to escape the sweep and fight on.
“When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” - Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes stories
