Challenges Raise Performance

The Chinese character crisis blends two others - danger and opportunity. Making the team is an achievement. Making the most of opportunity inhabits another level.

When Coach Scott Celli says "Every position is open" (almost, anyway) that's opportunity for those who seize it. It doesn't matter what your age, your grade, or your past experience, you have a chance to earn his trust. That gets you on the court.

OKRs are "Objectives" and "Key Results." Consider the megabank J.P. Morgan. JPM only enters business that they can be in the top three competitors.

Use an analogy. Think about volleyball as a business. How would a team succeed in business? Ideally, they grow the market (increase the eyeballs watching and consuming the product) and increase their market share. As a player, increase performance and grow your court time.

Lagniappe: Sport reflects society.

"“Bad companies,” Andy wrote, “are destroyed by crisis. Good companies survive them. Great companies are improved by them.” -  Measure What Matters: How Google, Bono, and the Gates Foundation Rock the World with OKRs by John Doerr

Lagniappe 2. You want to be an elite defender. J-Mac (Jill MacInnes) was the greatest back row player in Melrose history. Be like J-Mac.
