Practice is a mindset. Watching the UCONN women practice, Ralph Labella and I got insight into why the group won four consecutive NCAA titles. Learn from them.
Brad Stevens learned by watching the Patriots practice. They practice for ninety minutes at extreme tempo. They have other didactic and game planning meetings.
1. Be fully engaged, on time, stretched out and ready to go at the opening bell.
2. Nobody cuts corners. The initial two laps at practice, no player took a shortcut.
3. Make everything impact winning.
4. Practice at high tempo. Get more done.
5. Get more touches. Small-sided groups and small-sided games played at high tempo create more touches. More touches, more skill.
6. Maximize efficiency. No laps, no lines, no lectures.
7. Make it competitive. The best practices include offense, defense, and competition. Drag teammates from good to excellent, excellent to elite.
8. "Never cheat the drill."
Focus is a skill. Listening is a skill. Hard work is a skill. Energy is a skill. Mental toughness, the ability to 'push through' is a skill.
Lagniappe. Turn lemons into lemonade or at least not dishwater. Flamingo!
