Game 3: Melrose 3 Woburn 2 Quality Win Versus Strong Defensive Club

Melrose defeated Woburn 17-25, 25-13, 25-21, 23-25, 15-6 in a marathon at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School gym. The win keeps Melrose undefeated at 3-0.

Woburn has developed a quality program in a short time and is a "first division" club within the Middlesex League. They showed excellent blocking and defense extending Melrose to five sets.

Woburn led from 'box to wire' in set one as Melrose made a host of unforced errors and Woburn simply outplayed the locals.

In the second set, Emily Hudson heated up in one of the best games of her career, and Grace Davis came in adding a defensive spark as Melrose dominated the set. The defense of Nicole Abbott, Mary Kate Mahoney, Erin Torpey, and Emma Randolph stepped up.

Melrose mostly controlled the third set, taking a timeout leading 23-20. Hudson continued to dominate along with Erin Torpey, blending an arsenal of strong side attacks, cut shots, and short balls as she piled up kills.

Woburn regained the upper hand in the fourth set as Melrose played uphill most of the set. Melrose got to within 16-18 and Woburn stalled their momentum with a timeout. But Melrose rallied back to even at 21, forcing the Tanners' second timeout. But Woburn hung on, closing out Melrose from 23 all in a deserving comeback.

The final set hinged on getting an early edge. Woburn took the first point after the most extended rally of the set. But Melrose responded to go up 5-2 on a pair of Emma kills; Woburn predictably took another timeout. But Melrose couldn't be stopped with Erin outstanding offensively and setter Eva Haralabatos dominating from the service line. Freshman Chloe Gentile, another key contributor, hammered home an overpass to put the Lady Raiders up 10-3. Woburn ran out of gas as Melrose continue their attack and Chloe finished off the Tanners with a spike to capture the win at 15-6.

Lady Raider Notes: Melrose had a solid crowd at the home opener and Woburn also traveled well with plenty of support. With improvement throughout the Middlesex League, expect a lot of great matches this season.

Autumn Whalen saw time as a designated server for Melrose. Melrose used senior leadership to make plays in key moments as the team has matured.

The Danvers Lady Falcons coaching staff was in attendance scouting.
