Little Mac, not yet two, proudly said, “I made a Towah.” “Mac built a tower,” everyone said, with no concern about its height, stability, or beauty. The doing was enough, no judgment.
It’s easy to get concerned about the pecking order, winning percentage, and recognition. Everyone likes appreciation. Take a step back.
In The Art of Possibility Burton Zander suggested we think about contribution. Contribution is inclusive, non-judgmental and avoids comparison. It reminds me about a former President visiting NASA Houston. He asked an employee (a custodian) what he did. The employee said, “I helped put a man on the moon.”
The expression “seek understanding not validation,” approaches something similar.
- Be proud of your MVB contribution.
- Be a great teammate.
- Practice hard.
- Practice sportsmanship as a part of your MVB ethos.
- Add value at home, in school, and on the team.
- Make the team and teammates better.
