Melrose opens the 2024 campaign hosting 2023 Liberty Champion Belmont at the Middle School at about 5:30 p.m.
Belmont ranked 9th in Division 1 in the MIAA 2023 power rankings and defeated Melrose to open last season, Melrose's only ML12 blemish.
Belmont returns young but experienced players, historically presenting a stout defense, challenging the Melrose offense.
Melrose relies on an experienced core while young players challenge for bigger roles and opportunity.
The Melrose roster features nine seniors, three juniors, and a pair of sophomores. Consistency over years demands continual development of young players to assume bigger roles both in season and over seasons.
In 2023 sophomore Sabine Wenzel established herself as an impact middle with over 240 kills. Juniors Sofia Papatsoris, Maggie Turner, and Gigi Albuja all had major roles. And junior Leah Fowke earned ML12 All-Conference status. Freshman Anna Burns had moments as a designated server and defensive specialist.
Expect a highly competitive match between two ambitious programs.
