Melrose Gets Some Love

The Boston Globe today...

Set points

• Melrose has a younger team than the squad that reached the Division 3 semifinals last season, with just three seniors.

The good news for the three captains: they are now playing in more comfortable positions: Senior Sadie Jaggers moves from middle hitter to outside, senior Grace Gentile switches from defensive specialist to libero, and junior Leah Fowke shifts from right side to setter.

“I think the transition is going to be relatively easy for them,” coach Scott Celli said. “They’re captains because their leadership is really second to none.”

Sophomore Sabine Wetzel brings a 6-foot-4 frame to the middle of the front line, and junior defensive specialist Maggie Turner adds leadership.

League Notes:

Burlington topped Winchester 3-1 to stake its claim to the top spot in early ML12 action.

Newton North stays atop the Globe’s Top 20 girls’ volleyball poll, starting strong with a sweep of No. 13 North Quincy. No. 5 Lincoln-Sudbury showed that it is still potent despite graduating two of the top players in the state, earning a gritty four-set win over Shrewsbury at home. Half of the top 20 teams have not yet played their season opener, but No. 12 Concord-Carlisle fell to Wayland in four sets and previously-ranked Dennis-Yarmouth was swept by Plymouth South. No. 20 Natick enters the ranks, the team starting the season with a sweep of Milford. Records based on scores reported to the Globe.

The Globe poll as of Sept. 8, 2023. Teams were selected by the Globe sports staff.
