A player whom I played against in high school told me a few years ago, "players know who can play." He said it was frustrating to be below a player on the depth chart who was a scholarship player that couldn't play.
All he could do was work hard and be ready if a chance came. The "sunk cost" fallacy explains this. "Research suggests that rats, mice and humans are all sensitive to sunk costs after they have made the decision to pursue a reward." Once a coach or a team has invested in a player or process, they often continue to pursue it.
Most teams don't have the resources to videotape practice. That's unfortunate, because video is the truth machine, the technology Santa who knows who's been naughty or nice.
