Game 13: Melrose 3 Woburn 1

Coming off a seven-day hiatus, Melrose overcame the 'rest or rust' conundrum, outlasting Woburn on the road in a 25-19, 25-12, 22-25, 25-14 win. The win boosts Melrose to 11-2 while Woburn drops to 8-7. 

It was a team win with major contributions across the board. 

Sabine Wenzel was immense in the middle and Carol Higonenq had a big game outside. Add in the brilliant setting of Leah Fowke, and excellent attacking from Sofia Papatsoris and Emme Boyer and the team hit on all cylinders at time. Melrose also dialed in a few aces serving including one from Adele Ackman. 

The back row of Gg Albuja, libero Maggie Turner, and DS Alex Homan was more than solid and Abby Dennison was consistent at opposite. 

Melrose came out a tad sluggishly but pulled away late in the set, pulling away from 17-all to capture eight of the final ten points.

The second stanza saw Melrose play with some competitive fury as Sabine and Emmy in particular punctuated some violent attacks.

Woburn fought back audaciously in the third set as a peculiar call also went their way. With the score tied at 13, Carol tips the ball and it's blocked out of bounds. The officials award the point to Woburn. 

Melrose is baffled at the call. Woburn seizes the momentum despite a well-time Scott Celli timeout and wins the set. 

The fourth set starts inauspiciously with another flagrantly erroneous call, leading to a yellow card. But this time, Melrose used the fuel positively and pull away from the tanners. 

Melrose Notes. The game was another playoff atmosphere as the combination of acoustic insufficiency and a small but vociferous crowd had the noise level high on the decibel meter. 

Melrose goes back to action Thursday night hosting Wakefield for Youth Night.
