Melrose faces a formidable foe tonight traveling to the Tiger's Lair at Newton North.
North has a loosely affiliated training program in SMASH which is one of the premier developmental programs in Massachusetts.
They've won the State Championship in the past, no minor accomplishment in the division historically dominated by Barnstable. They are always tall, talented and are taught "intent", to hit hard and worry about finesse later.
Melrose has a history with the Tigers.
Most noteworthy was the 2012 match going into the postseason where Melrose lost in five but the competition helped propel them to a state championship. My memory fades but I think North was the title runnerup to Barnstable that year.
Melrose Notes:
Part of the not-so-secret sauce Melrose enjoys is the constant influx of talented young players. In addition to senior Elena Soukos atop the kills/set leaders are juniors Gia Vlajkovic and Chloe Gentile.
The setter quarterbacks the offense with vision, decisions, and accuracy. Junior Emma Desmond sits atop the ML leader board in assists/set.
