Melrose (11-2) topped Lexington in a five set marathon at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School...with scores 25-18, 22-25, 25-15, 22-25, and 15-7.
Lexington struggled early defensively but gradually steadied, making for a highly competitive afternoon of volleyball.
Junior Grace Sanderson started in the middle along with Emily Hudson and both had productive games both offensively and defensively. Mary Kate Mahoney had a productive afternoon defensively. Emma Randolph had a strong match attacking from the outside and added some back row attacking.
Melrose struggled to gain control of the match but fought back to make sets two and four competitive. One key for Melrose was very few service errors during the match.
Around the Net: In other Middlesex League action, Belmont defeated Burlington 3-2 to give Winchester some breathing room at the top.
A number of alumnae were spotted as Faces in the Crowd - Alyssa Abbott (from the State Championship team), Kat Torpey, and Jen Cohane of the 2005 State finalists.
