Big Game Hunters, a Look Back at Melrose-Barnstable 2009

"Make the big-time where you are." Be excited, not nervous.

Melrose has played big games for decades, winning championships, starting in 2003 when they beat Arlington Catholic who came in 22-0 having not lost a set the entire season.

But the 2009 match against Barnstable was another to remember. Barnstable is the unquestioned premier program in the state, having won 18 Division 1 State Championships. They are 'the' volleyball brand in Massachusetts.

Melrose's squad was loaded in 2009, including future Hall-of-Famer Hannah Brickley and setter Colleen Hanscom, who will be inducted into the Hall in a couple of weeks. Add in one of the most underrated hitters in Melrose history, Laura Irwin and other terrific players...and you'll set the results. Study the "hitting intent" that former Newton North coach Richard Barton described and especially the craft of Hannah who 'hit 'em where they ain't."
