Game 17: All Hands on Deck, Melrose 3 Stoneham 0
Melrose traveled to Stoneham and emerged with a straight set victory, 25-11, 25-12, and 25-9. It got sloppy late. Everyone saw action and contributed to the win. The win moves Melrose to 16-1 on the season.
Senior captains dominated the early action with Lily Fitzgerald conducting, Saoirse Connolly and Lydia Lombardo attacking, and Jill Mercer anchoring the defense. Before the match, Coach Scott Celli praised Jill for her positioning and concentration. The defense of Nicole Abbott and Mary Kate Mahoney played flawlessly, abetted by rotating defenders Erin Torpey and Lydia.
Freshman Emily Hudson and sophomore Grace Davis both continue to grow at the opposite hitter position as the coaches sort out the rotation.
Stoneham hung around during the second set, but when Melrose needed treatment at 13-9, they went to "the ER" (Emma Randolph) who stitched up the offense.
The third set saw predominantly freshmen and sophomores ply their trade as a preview to future versions of Melrose volleyball. At times Melrose had both Emily Hudson and Sam Dewey up front, with Sam contributing a thunderous block. Sophomores Marie Maher and Claire Albuja looked solid on defense and outside hitter, and Kiki Kiernan served well and showed ability on defense. For most of the final frame, Melrose had two frosh and four sophomores on the court.
