Melrose traveled to the potential October House of Horrors and left AC with a postseason berth, a straight set win, and momentum headed into Thursday's match against always tough Central. The Lady Raiders emerged with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-16 victory.
After some back-and-forth early action, Melrose went up 13-8 and 21-14 only to see AC rebound to get back within one at 22-21 before Melrose got three late points, culminated by a Victoria Crovo (16) kill.
The second stanza was more difficult with Melrose trailing 3-0 (scoresheet provided by Dick Collis) and 8-5 before evening the score at 8, 9, 10, 12, and 14 en route to an 18-14 lead. Melrose put the icing on the set winning seven of the final twelve points.
The final frame was nip and tuck early with ties at 2, 4, and 6 before Melrose pulled away to lead 14-8 and 16-11. Melrose had a service run from there (Jill Mercer) to go up 22-11 and only the final score (25-16) was in doubt.
Seniors led the way with the V-Rex (Victoria) huge with sixteen sweet kills and Cat Torpey adding another half dozen.
Melrose has its hands full with Central up next.
