Style, Substance, and Effectiveness

Leaders bring a variety of resources - technical skill, cognitive (analytical) skill, and emotional intelligence (rapport, communication, engagement).

Emotional intelligence is the chief determinant of long-term success. What is that? Emotional intelligence includes self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation (all personal qualities) and empathy and social skill.

Effective coaches (and ineffective ones) often have technical competence, but the best leaders excel at relating with players, other coaches, administrators, and community. Melrose has been fortunate to have a generation of quality volleyball coaching.

Here's a brief article (and excellent video) examining the alternative situation. Daniel Goleman is a leader in the leadership and emotional intelligence field.
