Game 16: Crusaders Vanquished 3 - 0

Melrose hosted improving Bishop Fenwick and remained undefeated at home with a 25-9, 25-22, 25-22 sweep of the Crusaders.

The first set was all Melrose with a 10-1 opening burst, never threatened. Saoirse Connolly was tough early and throughout, leading Melrose with eleven kills, followed by Lydia Lombardo (7) and Emma Randolph (6).

The second set saw back-and-forth play with Melrose generally holding small advantages. Fenwick got even at sixteen, but Melrose had enough staying power to fend off the visitors. Strong play in the back row by libero Jill Mercer and sophomores Mary Kate Mahoney and Nicole Abbott catalyzed the win.

The third set saw key contributions from opposite hitter Grace Davis, a sophomore. Fenwick got out to a quick 8-3 advantage, but a Scott Celli timeout translated into a service error and Melrose battled back to even the score at 9. Melrose kept Bishop Fenwick in the set with an uncharacteristic number of service errors. The Crusaders hung around with excellent defense but a pair of late Davis kills iced the match for Melrose.

Lady Raider notes: The Melrose JV defeated Bishop Fenwick 2-1. Amarea Shepard had a dominating performance in the middle. Melrose travels to Stoneham tomorrow for a 5:00 p.m. rematch.

Winchester continues to pace the Middlesex League but dropped a weekend contest to Arlington Catholic.
