Tryout Tips

As tryouts approach, ask yourself "what is my MVB skill?" How am I going to earn a spot, get on the court, become a contributor? If you're an established player, ask "what can I do better?" Can I close the double block better or pass more efficiently?

In general keep these in mind:

1. Make other players around you better. Communicate, energize, encourage. "Nothing great is ever accomplished without enthusiasm." Maggie Turner was the best communicator ever on the court. Be like Maggie.

2. Outwork everyone. The whistle blows, sprint to the coaches. Never let a a ball hit the floor.

3. Be coachable. In French class in high school, Monsieur Benoit would say, 'ecoutez et repetez' (listen and repeat). When the coaches give directions, do your best to carry out their instructions.

4. Focus. Attention is a skill. Listening is a skill. Eye contact is a skill. If you can't focus, you can't earn trust. No trust. No play. Mindfulness has been shown to enhance attention in students as young as first grade.

Melrose has rarely lost to fear. That is never acceptable. Let your best volleyball out.

5. Embrace the challenge. Be excited not anxious. Commit to improve every day.

Lagniappe. Make mental skill your superpower. And it's transferable to every aspect of your life.
