Critical Thinking in Volleyball

Critical thinking pays dividends at home, in school, and in volleyball. What are some examples of critical thinking?

What really matters, the 'root causes' of success?

  • Put the ball down.
  • Keep the ball up.

Where do you generate 'positive points'?

  • Service
  • Block-kills
  • Attacks

Where do you 'prevent' opponent scoring?

  • Blocks
  • Serve receive
  • Digs
What controls the attack?
  • It's not the first pass. That keeps the ball in play.
  • The setter is the quarterback; she directs the attack.
  • Playing "out of system" (non-setter makes the set) is vital to more attacks
What actions are underrated?
  • Fundamentals - footwork and platform skills
  • Consistency (avoiding bad plays)
  • Aggressiveness
  • Resilience (mental toughness and self-belief)
Volleyball is a thinking person's sport. "Do more of what works and less of what doesn't."
