Move the Goal Posts or Yourself?

Whether parents, coaches, or outside observers we see and evaluate, often incorrectly.

We assess 'wrong' based on emotion (endowment bias), recency (last game performance), anchoring (stuck association), sample size (small size can leave big impressions), confirmation bias (I read this about them), and so forth.

All of us have an unattainable 'ceiling', a minimum level 'floor', and where we are now. The now can change minute to minute, day to day, year to year. Coaching helps players move along the continuum that Coach Saban calls the "Capability Gap." Some players fully embrace that and others actively resist.

Imagine the player who shows up early, 'never cheats the drill', builds athleticism, improves skill, takes coaching, and manifests a 'standard of reliability'. If you were a coach, how would you 'see' that player through coaches' eyes?

All of the eighth grade girls in this picture are high achievers in different areas. Everyone wants and needs to be seen, heard, and valued.
