Leaders Stand Out

Leadership isn't forced.

To become a leader, focus on doing what leaders do.

  • Be punctual. North Carolina guard Phil Ford set his watch 10 minutes fast to "Dean Smith Time."
  • Be positive. This includes 'positive speaking'
  • Energize yourself and others.
  • Build your sport-specific skills.
  • Study leadership skills - such as communication
  • Learn to delegate
  • Develop a portfolio of success and failure "sticky" stories.
  • Study "widely-recognized" leaders.
  • Understand the importance of discipline. "Discipline is destiny."
  • Read.
  • Learn to give and receive feedback.
  • Self-assess. "Think again." Learn from mistakes.
  • Ask better questions.
  • Be eclectic. Borrow positive qualities from those around us.
Here's a brief, simple story. Nelson Mandela attended community meetings with his father. His father always spoke last to allow a more nuanced discussion of the issue at hand.

Lagniappe. Top leadership books to consider for your bookshelf
