Ripping the Band-Aid Off

"To quickly do something painful or unpleasant so that the discomfort is short-lived" is ripping the Band-Aid off.

That doesn't happen often in sports. Acknowledging poor play or failed-decisions is the closest it comes.

Often, decisions leave scars. UCONN Women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma shared that at age two, he rolled into a warming fire in Northern Italy. He has burn scars on his abdomen.

  • We don't get selected or get slotted for a lower club than we expected.
  • We don't perform as well as we anticipate.
  • We get fewer minutes or role than we expect.
  • We lose our starting position.
  • We get hurt.

Practice resilience when confronted with disappointment. Stay positive, work hard, compete in practice, and ask coaches how you can improve and find a bigger role. When opportunity arises, seize it.

Lagniappe. More on attacking. Read the pass. Be ready with your arm swing and practice your footwork.

Make the other 'guy' rip the Band-Aid off.
