Experience

The opinions expressed are solely those of the author. This blog does not represent the opinions of the City of Melrose, the School Department, or the Athletic Department.

"Experience is the best teacher, but sometimes the tuition is high."

What separates excellent from good? The consistent ability to make more plays and to make them under pressure defines teams. Former Patriots' coach Bill Parcells said, "you are what your record says you are." It's not quite so simple.

Excellence is relative. If you are the tenth best poker player in the world, but you only play the top five, you will lose a lot.

How do good teams become exceptional?
  • "Every day is player development day." Keep grinding.
  • "The team comes first." It's about the team or you.
  • "Champions do extra." Unrequired work is a separator.
  • "Excellence is our only agenda."
  • Communicate. Talk every play.
  • "Next play." Do not allow the last play to impact this play.
  • "Excel in your role." - Reserve players, challenge the starters.
  • "Be a great teammate."
  • "Play for the girl next to you."
  • "Do not quit."
