Volleyball Integrity

Integrity means always doing the right thing  How does that apply to volleyball?

The above passage comes from Beyond Basketball by Coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Do you know the phrase "don't cheat the drill?" It means giving your physical and mental best on each repetition.

You practice serving every day. You can focus on serving the ball over the net or something more. You can focus on serving to zone 1 or zone 5, or the sideline alleys and between zones 1 and 6 or 5 and 6. Teams score positive points with attacks, blocks, and service. Success against the top teams means scoring more points (and minimizing errors) on serve.

The great players of MVB shared "sports character" or "sports integrity." In addition to self-motivation, they energized others.

When people ask about the best player I ever coached, Cecilia Kay, I'd say, "she never cheats the drill." People asked why I was so high about her. After coaching her for a couple of days, Ralph Labella said, "best prospect ever to come out of Melrose." In addition to being a McDonald's All-America nominee, she was also valedictorian in her school, testament to "how you do anything is how you do everything."
