Thinking Better

All opinions in the blog are solely my own.

Part of the challenge of adolescence is thinking better. Here's a great summary of Adam Grant's book, "Think Again."

As you navigate your volleyball career, think about how your ideas change about offensive and defensive volleyball.

For example, think about 'winning volleyball'.

  • Winning volleyball is aggression and consistency.
  • The best teams don't give away lots of points with physical and mental errors. That doesn't mean they never make a mistake. They make fewer.
  • "Control what you can control." You have total control over service - where you line up, how you serve, long or short, seams, or attacking a player or area.
  • You "win" points by finishing a serve, an attack, or a block-kill. Defense allows you to get into position for the latter two.
Grant encourages you to keep a 'rethinking scorecard' about how a better understanding changes your beliefs.

Shape our beliefs to the facts, not the facts to our beliefs. That applies throughout our lives, not just sports.

Confirmation bias is reading or consuming news that only fits our worldview. It's hard to think better about sport or anything else with an abridged data set.
