The Hero's Journey

"The story is king." Understand the story and what must be done to make it happen.

Every season, every team has a story. Coaches wear different hats - director, writer, editor, critic. Story rules - the blend of plot, characters, and dialogue.

You write your narrative. To do so, understand the 'hero monomyth' as described by Joseph Campbell in "The Hero's Journey." First up is your 'Call to Adventure'. This happens throughout history from "The Odyssey" to "Superman," "The Princess Bride," "Wonder Woman," and recently in clips about Felicie from "Ballerina."

The great players of MVB all underwent transformation during their careers, as are current MVB stalwarts. 2009 Hannah Brickley was not the same as 2006 Hannah. Nor were any of the recent "Triple Crown" winners, Elena Soukos, Via Vlajkovic, or Sadie Jaggers as freshmen.

Characters (players) are authentic, need to be themselves, while evolving to become leaders in spirit, culture, work ethic, and communication.

This article describes the initiation, departure, and eventual return of the hero. You may find similarities in your family's or your experience.
