Think Like a Genius, Volleyball STEM (Just Kidding)

You don't need to know a lot of physics or math to play volleyball. But knowing some will help.

First, I digress with a review of a book about Nobel Prize winner, Richard Feynman.

Point 1: If the ball is below the top of the net (7'4"), you can't hit the ball level or down without hitting it into the net. If it's a "get me over" situation, get it over, whether it's a free ball or a downball.

Point 2: The Bernoulli Principle impacts volleyball motion which you can exploit with serve spin or float serves.

Point 3. Do the math. Pythagoras is your friend. Hitting cross-court, e.g. from zone 2 to opponent zone 1 gives you extra "margin of safety" as far as hitting long.

Lagniappe. If you have a measuring tape and a possible right triangle, how can you prove that it's a 90 degree angle?

Coaches have the obligation to tell the truth, where you stand and what you need to become to be more. Your task is to act on those impressions and recommendations, even though they may not make you feel 'comfortable'. Excellent players want to be coached not cheered.
