The Volleyball Banquet and Commitment

The volleyball breakup dinner arrives tonight, celebrating the players and families who make MVB happen. Two words we won't hear are "I wish," as in I wish I worked harder.

Many of you have heard of Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball's 'color barrier' becoming a Hall of Famer, despite enduring unimaginable abuse and prejudice as a player. Few of you know Mack Robinson, his brother. He earned a silver medal, finishing after Jesse Owens in the 1936 200 meter dash in the Olympics. Fame was not his destiny as he became a street sweeper.

Another American hero spoke of sweeping streets.

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”

― Martin Luther King Jr.

Coach Scott Celli will speak of opportunity, not obligation during his closing remarks. Think about that while practicing bumping or spiking, doing planks or plyometrics. Honor yourself through commitment, perseverance, and preparation of excellence at home, in the classroom, or on the court.

Lagniappe. Winners do more. Here's the Anson Dorrance quote (again) about Mia Hamm, working out, alone, unnoticed.

Lagniappe 2. Work your core
