Paideia - Part of Culture, Part of Life

All opinions expressed in the blog are solely my own.

I want Melrose to win, but win the right way - with dignity and respect. The Greeks called the process paideia. That meant a, formative and life-long process whose goal was for each person … to be an asset to his friends, to his family, and, most important, to the polis.” Strong parental leadership is part of the process, too.

Yes, Melrose has won a state championship, ten sectional titles, and a bevy of league standards. But they've also won the MIAA Sportsmanship Award in 2004.

Every coach wants to coach great people and great competitors. It would be hard to develop a short list of character and competitor standouts... because there are so many candidates. Conversely, finding 'problem children' would be far harder because high character is the MVB standard.

Yes, winning heals a lot of wounds, but coaching leadership, player leadership, and player followership all contribute to culture.
