MVB Life Hacks

The opinions expressed within are solely my own

An Intensive Care Unit Physician's Assistant asked everyone for one tip. It could be anything. Mine remains, "share something great."

You won't go through life as a volleyball player. Develop a core philosophy, a set of principles to adopt. Some may change; others won't. Consider the Warren Buffett 25-5 rule. Start with your list of twenty-five and edit to a more manageable list.

How you do anything is how you do everything.

What has this got to do with MVB? Everything. Read on.

1. "Always do your best." The fourth agreement from The Four Agreements. Our best won't always be 'the best' or even 'our personal best' but doing our best lessens the pain of regret.

2. "Champions do extra." Whether you believe in Malcolm Gladwell's "10,000 hours" for expertise or not, practice to improve. We choose whether we live closer to our floor or our ceiling. Choose well.

3. "We make our habits and our habits make us." Better habits, better life. The best book on habits is James Clear's Atomic Habits. You're probably not asking Santa for books, but it's a keeper.

4. "Your joy is my joy." Live a philosophy of appreciation for both our good fortune and for others'. 'Mudita' expresses joy for the success of others. In a sense, it's the opposite of schadenfreude, "to take delight in the misfortune of others." Live a life of gratitude not grievance.

5. Know your priorities. Coach Sonny Lane taught us over fifty years ago to prioritize family, school, then sports. That advice never goes out of style.

Bonus: "Learn every day." The 1% solution of daily improvement builds a fortress of experience, knowledge, and wisdom.

MVB celebrates this week with the Volleyball Banquet because of the sum of the contributions, sacrifice, and work of many readers.

Lagniappe. Life hacks.
