Game 12: Melrose 3 Central Catholic 0

It's always good to win. Melrose hosted Central on the holiday and captured a 25-22, 25-17, 25-22 win. The win boosts Melrose's record to 11-1. If my assumptions about the MIAA power rankings system are correct, Melrose should stand at about 3.74 rating points. That could vault Melrose up toward #5 in the MIAA rankings.

Teams with high average margin of victory (Canton, Longmeadow) will be hard to catch.

Sadie Jaggers continued to 'pop smoke' with another fourteen kills, more proof of her smooth transition outside.

Grace Gentile led from the back with 21 receptions and Leah Fowke built on her Globe "Player of the Week" status with 26 more assists.

The only negative was another twelve service errors and a service percentage of 84 percent.

Fifty shades of grey. I tracked fifty 'possessions' looking to assess where the points arose.

C - Central winner

CE - Central error

+  Melrose winner

-  Melrose error

Winners include successful direct attacks, service aces, or plays that led to a point. Errors include plays like service errors, balls hit long, short, wide, and violations (e.g. net).

Where did Central's points arise (21)?

5 positive plays, 16 Melrose errors (24% scoring on their merits)

Where did Melrose's points arise (29)?

16 positive plays, 13 Central errors (55% on Melrose's merits)

During the final eight point run of the first set, 3 of 8 Melrose points scored on Melrose actions, five on Central errors.

Examples:

Sofia Papatsoris administers a scalpel at point five of the second set.

Sabine Wenzel gets the kill but Maggie Turner makes two excellent plays to put Melrose in position to score.
