"Character is Job One"

“It was miraculous. It was almost no trick at all, he saw, to turn vice into virtue and slander into truth, impotence into abstinence, arrogance into humility, plunder into philanthropy, thievery into honor, blasphemy into wisdom, brutality into patriotism, and sadism into justice. Anybody could do it; it required no brains at all. It merely required no character.”

Joseph Heller, Catch-22

Character appears in everything you do.

  • Punctuality
  • Commitment - work ethic and discipline
  • Teamwork - communication and unselfishness
  • Preparation - study and practice
  • Self-care - conditioning, sleep, nutrition, chemical health, mindfulness

Become the person you want to be, to become the player you need to be.

Lagniappe. Being an effective coach or good teammate means having hard conversations, too. Adam Grant suggests that criticism not target the person or even the idea. Effective criticism implies finding solutions.

Coaches see the attitude and effort players put into practice and preparation. I've heard how much players care and how much being successful means to them. Coaches enjoy coaching players who want success as much as we do. Keep working and good things often happen.

Lagniappe 2. Statistics deserve analysis in context. A tall player with a low 'contact point' on attacks may still get blocked often. Low attack efficiency? Are you getting on top of the ball?
